In our series of letters from African journalists, media and communications trainer Joseph Warungu writes about what he will be looking out for in 2019. After consistently losing out in football bets last year, I have little confidence in predicting anything for 2019 beyond the fact that the sun will rise and set in Africa. But this much I know without a shadow of doubt: Africa in the coming year will be focused on the beast, the ballot and Big Brother. The African version of the famous reality TV show, which started 16 years ago in South Africa, will be launched in Sierra Leone in 2019. And it is promising to be big. Already 2,000 application forms for Big Brother Sierra Leone have been sold. With a top prize of about $12,000 (£9,400) and the chance to be really famous, it is already the talk of the town, following the success of Big Sister last year, the country's first-ever reality TV show.

Humans usually mark the passage of time by their own growth. On 23rd November, 2018 three passengers allegedly stole a Lyft driver’s vehicle in  Accra, Ghana and took it for a  fatal,  1 p.m.  joyride. The carjackers, described as three adult males, two died from their injuries, and the third got  away with robbery, stealing the handbags and wallets from the victims they got into contact with according to the  Adabraka Polica Station.  They had gotten picked up by a 46-year-old Lyft driver from the area  on Friday morning and driven around for a few  minutes before eventually setting upon him.  The driver pulled over and the three men allegedly threatened his life. British company named Shreddies launched a flatulence-filtering line of discreet pants and clothes that are available in black and grey and can be used in the car, office or at home. Shreddies inventor Paul O’ Leary said: ”Helping customers with the embarrassing side effects of these illnesses is Shreddies’ main goal and we hope to continue creating innovative products. This new cushion is a belt and braces approach to flatulence filtration.” Paul manufactures all his Shreddies products in his Leicestershire home at Cotes Mill and now distributes to more than 20 countries. A Peruvian man has divorced his wife after discovering intimate photos of her with another man on Google Maps. The man had been researching the best way to reach a popular bridge in Lima, the capital of Peru, when he spotted a familiar figure in one of the Google Street View photos. It showed a woman in a white top, jeans and heels, sat on a bench stroking the hair of a man who was lying down with his head in her lap. He noticed that the woman’s clothes were identical to those he had seen his wife wear on several occasions – and when he looked closer, he realised it was her. The photos had been taken by a Google camera car at Puente de los Suspiros de Barranco [Bridge of Sighs of the Ravine], in Lima in 2013. The man angrily confronted his wife with the evidence of her past infidelity, and she admitted to having had an affair. The unnamed couple later divorced, according to local news media. A man who wouldn’t stop having sex with a car exhaust has been sentenced, according to court documents. Ryan Scott Malek was arrested when police found him in a questionable position with a parked car on May 1. The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge of lewd and lascivious behaviour that was filed in Municipal Court in Newton. In June, Malek was named in a criminal complaint charging him with repeatedly trying to have sex with the tailpipe of a parked vehicle. Malek was reportedly ‘oblivious’ to what he was doing as he was four times over the legal alcohol limit so police had to taser him, according to Smoking Gun. He was taken to hospital and given the chance to sober up.
